The UK has three separate winter payments to help with heating costs, and people regularly miss out on at least one. They're easy to mix up, so here's each one — what it's worth, who gets it, and the single thing that unlocks the most: making sure you're claiming Pension Credit if you're eligible.
Quick facts
- Winter Fuel Payment
- An annual lump sum for older people (eligibility rules have changed — check)
- Cold Weather Payment
- £25 for each 7-day cold spell, for those on certain benefits
- Warm Home Discount
- £150 off your electricity bill
- The key
- Claiming Pension Credit often unlocks all three
1. Winter Fuel Payment
An annual lump sum to help older people with heating over winter, paid automatically to those who qualify. The eligibility rules have changed in recent years — at times it's been limited to people on Pension Credit and certain other benefits, and at other times opened more widely with an income threshold. Because it's been a political football, always check the current year's rules on GOV.UK. The surest way to be in scope: make sure you're claiming any Pension Credit you're entitled to.
2. Cold Weather Payment
If the temperature where you live is recorded (or forecast) at zero or below for 7 days in a row, you get £25 for that period. It's paid automatically to people on qualifying benefits like Pension Credit, Universal Credit, or income-related ESA/JSA. You don't apply — but you do need to be on a qualifying benefit, which is another reason to claim what you're entitled to. (Scotland runs its own Winter Heating Payment instead.)
3. Warm Home Discount
A one-off £150 knocked off your electricity bill over winter. It's for people on Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit) and certain low-income households. Some suppliers apply it automatically; others ask you to register early in the autumn before the scheme's limited places fill up — so don't wait.
Make sure you get them — step by step
Check Pension Credit first
If you're over State Pension age on a low income, claim it — it's the gateway to the winter payments and much more.
Confirm Winter Fuel Payment rules
Check the current year's eligibility on GOV.UK. If you qualify it's usually paid automatically in November/December.
Register for the Warm Home Discount
Contact your electricity supplier in early autumn — some schemes are first-come, first-served.
Cold Weather Payments are automatic
No action needed if you're on a qualifying benefit — but check your account after a cold snap to be sure it arrived.
