The bank holiday rule, in one line

If your payment is due on a bank holiday, you are paid on the previous working day — normally the Friday before a Monday bank holiday. Money going into a bank account arrives early. If you collect at the post office, it is there from that Friday. You never lose a payment and you are never paid twice: the date simply moves forward. And if you are a jobseeker whose signing day falls on the holiday, you do not have to sign on.

Every day below is confirmed at source. Where a payment day genuinely varies by your local office or your individual claim, we say varies rather than print a day that might be wrong for you — a guess here costs someone a wasted trip to the post office.

Every bank holiday that moves a payment (2026–2027)

These are the dates to watch. Any payment due on one of them is issued on the previous working day instead.

Seasonal and once-a-year payments

Some money does not arrive weekly or monthly at all — it turns up once a year, and missing the window can mean missing the payment entirely.

The Back to School deadline is the one people lose money on: if it does not come automatically and you miss the end of September, that is €160–€285 gone for the year.

Christmas — the one worth planning for

December is the month payment dates move most. The Christmas Bonus — an extra 100% of your weekly payment, minimum €20 — normally lands in the first week of December, automatically, with your usual payment. You do not apply. It goes to people on long-term payments: pensioners, carers, people with disabilities, lone parents and the long-term unemployed. On top of that, Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day shift the ordinary payment run, so late-December money often arrives several days early. Budget for that gap rather than being caught by it.

Common questions

What happens to my social welfare payment on a bank holiday?

If your payment is due on a bank holiday, it is paid early. Electronic payments into a bank account go in on the previous working day — normally the Friday before a Monday bank holiday. If you collect at the post office, your payment is available from that Friday too. You do not lose a payment and you do not get paid twice; the date simply moves forward.

When is Child Benefit paid in Ireland?

Child Benefit is paid on the first Tuesday of every month, at €140 per child per month. If the first Tuesday falls near a bank holiday the money can land slightly earlier, but the normal date is the first Tuesday.

When is Domiciliary Care Allowance paid?

Domiciliary Care Allowance is paid on the third Tuesday of every month, at €380 a month. It is a monthly payment, not weekly, which is why it does not follow the same pattern as most other schemes.

Do I have to sign on if the bank holiday falls on my day?

No. If you are a jobseeker and your signing day falls on a bank holiday, you do not have to sign on that day. Your payment is issued early as normal.

Why does this page not list a payment day for Carer's Allowance or Jobseeker's?

Because we could not confirm one fixed day at source, and for jobseekers the day is genuinely set by your local office rather than nationally. We would rather tell you to check MyWelfare or your award letter than print a day that turns out to be wrong for you. Every other payment listed here has its day confirmed.

When is the Christmas Bonus paid?

The Christmas Bonus is normally paid in the first week of December, with your usual payment and on your usual day. It goes automatically to people on long-term payments — pensioners, carers, people with disabilities, lone parents and the long-term unemployed. You do not apply for it.
