Common questions

I rent and never claimed anything — where do I start?
If you're in Ireland, the Rent Tax Credit is the fastest win — up to €1,000 a year and backdatable. In the UK, check Housing Benefit / the housing element of Universal Credit and Council Tax support.
Can my landlord stop me claiming?
No. Claiming a tax credit or support is your right and doesn't need their permission. Know your tenant rights too — deposits, notice and repairs.
Does it matter if I share with housemates?
Usually each person who pays rent can claim in their own right. Check the specific guide for your situation.
