Social Welfare Christmas Payment Dates 2026

Christmas Day 2026 — Friday 25 December
Some payments move. Some don't.

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday and New Year's Day 2027 is also a Friday — so Friday payments like the State Pension move twice. Below is exactly what happens to each payment, and what the Christmas Bonus is worth.

Two separate things happen to your money in December, and mixing them up is why people think they have been overpaid. One: the Christmas Bonus, an extra payment. Two: some payments are issued early because banks and post offices close — that is your normal money arriving sooner, not extra money.

What is confirmed, and what isn't

Confirmed. The bank holidays are fixed in law, and the rule is fixed: a payment due on a bank holiday is issued on the previous working day. Those dates are in the tables below and will not change.
Not yet announced. The 2026 Christmas Bonus has not been confirmed — it is decided in Budget 2027 on 6 October 2026. It has been 100% for the last several years, but that is a pattern, not a promise. The Department also publishes an exact Christmas schedule each year, usually in November, which often brings payments forward further than the basic rule. We update this page when it lands.

Bank holidays over Christmas 2026

St Stephen's Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, so the substitute holiday is Monday 28 December — giving a three-day shutdown.

How much is the Christmas Bonus worth?

At the 100% rate paid in recent years, the Bonus equals one extra week of your normal payment, with a minimum of €20. Using the 2026 rates, that works out as:

PaymentWeekly rate 2026Bonus at 100%
State Pension (Contributory)€299.30€299.30
State Pension (Non-Contributory)€288.00€288.00
Disability Allowance€254.00€254.00
One-Parent Family Payment€254.00€254.00
Carer's Allowance (under 66)€270.00€270.00
Invalidity Pensionvaries100% of your rate
Child Benefit€140/monthNot a Bonus payment
Domiciliary Care Allowance€380/month€380.00

Child Benefit does not attract a Christmas Bonus — it is not one of the qualifying long-term payments, which surprises a lot of parents.

Who gets it — and the 12-month rule that catches people out

The Bonus goes to people on long-term payments, automatically. You do not apply, and around 1.5 million people receive it. The qualifying payments are:

The catch. Being on a payment is not always enough — you generally need 12 months on it. Jobseeker's Allowance needs 312 days. Illness Benefit needs 12 months. If you started claiming this year, check before you budget for the money.

No energy credit this Christmas

Worth saying plainly, because it is the most common December question: there is no universal energy credit. Budget 2026 ended the €250 electricity credits and the once-off double weeks, and put the money into permanent weekly increases instead. The Christmas Bonus is a separate thing and still exists. If a payment lands early and looks like a double week, that is the closure schedule, not a bonus — do not spend it twice.

Common questions

When is the Christmas Bonus paid in Ireland?

In recent years it has been paid in the first week of December, with your normal payment and on your normal day — casual jobseekers a week later. The 2026 Bonus has not been announced yet; it is decided in Budget 2027 on 6 October 2026, so treat any date you see before then as an expectation, not a fact.

How much is the Christmas Bonus?

It has been 100% of your normal weekly payment for the last several years, with a minimum of €20. On a full State Pension (Contributory) of €299.30 that is an extra €299.30; on Disability Allowance of €254 it is an extra €254. The percentage is set each year in the Budget and is not guaranteed.

Do I have to apply for the Christmas Bonus?

No. If you qualify it is paid automatically, with your usual payment, on your usual day. There is no form and no application. Around 1.5 million people receive it.

Who does not get the Christmas Bonus?

It goes to long-term payments only. The big catch is the 12-month rule: Jobseeker's Allowance needs 312 days (about 12 months), and Illness Benefit needs 12 months. Short-term payments generally do not qualify. If your payment is not on the list above, check before you budget for it.

Will my payment date change over Christmas 2026?

Yes, some will. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday and New Year's Day 2027 is also a Friday, so Friday payments like the State Pension move to the Thursday before. The Department also usually pays some payments further in advance because banks and post offices close — it publishes the exact schedule each year, normally in November.

Is there an energy credit or a double payment at Christmas 2026?

There is no universal energy credit — Budget 2026 ended them. The Christmas Bonus is a separate thing and does still exist. Some payments are also issued early over the closure period, which can look like a double week in your account, but it is your normal money paid sooner, not extra.
