About the Rent Tax Credit
What is the Rent Tax Credit?
It's an Irish tax credit for people who pay private rent. It's worth up to €1,000 a year for a single person (€2,000 for a jointly-assessed couple) in 2024 and 2025, and was €500/€1,000 in 2022 and 2023. The credit is the lower of that maximum or 20% of the rent you paid in the year.
Can I backdate my claim?
Yes — you can claim back up to four years, so in 2026 you can still claim 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, plus the current year in real time. Many renters are owed several years at once.
Is this really free, and is my information safe?
The calculator and your result are completely free. Everything runs in your browser — your name, PPS number and rent details never leave your device and are never sent to us. Members can download the completed claim pack as a printable PDF; that's the only paid part.
Do you submit the claim to Revenue for me?
No — and that's deliberate. We never log in to your Revenue account or handle your claim for you. We hand you a completed pack with the exact steps and your details filled in, so you submit it yourself in a few minutes through Revenue myAccount. You stay in full control.
Who qualifies for the Rent Tax Credit?
Broadly, you must pay rent on a property you use as your home (some other qualifying tenancies count too, including rent for a child in college), under a genuine tenancy, and the rent can't be paid to a relative in certain situations. Always confirm your eligibility and the current rules on revenue.ie before you submit.
