The financial truth
they keep from you
Billions go unclaimed every year — not because people don't want the money, but because the system is deliberately complicated. We exist to fix that.
We take publicly available information — government grants, tax credits, tenant rights, consumer protections — and translate it from jargon into plain English, so everyday people can claim what's already theirs.
Why we exist
Accountants and solicitors charge hundreds an hour to explain rules that are, in fact, public. The wealthy have always had people to read the fine print for them. Everyone else is left to navigate deliberately complicated systems alone — and so they miss out.
The numbers are staggering: more than £24 billion in benefits and support goes unclaimed across Great Britain every year. €558 million in Irish energy grants sits untouched. 2.7 million households aren't claiming Council Tax Support they're entitled to. This isn't an accident — governments, retailers, banks and energy companies all benefit from you not knowing your rights.
Our mission is simple: make everyday people in Ireland and the UK as financially informed as the wealthy — using the exact same public information, explained without the jargon and without the bill.
Who's behind this
The People's Pocket is written and run by one person — Zak Carolan — not a content farm, not a marketing agency, and not a bank trying to sell you something. Every guide on this site is researched against the official source (Revenue, gov.ie, GOV.UK, HMRC), written in plain English, and re-checked against official rates every week.
But this was never meant to be about a guru. The moment a thing like this becomes about one person, it quietly stops being about you. You'll find no "as seen on," no lifestyle brand, no course to buy. The proof isn't a face — it's meant to be the Wins Wall: real people, real money, in their own words. A renter who claims the €1,000 rent tax credit they never knew about is worth more than any expert telling you it works.
What we are — and what we're not
What we are
- Straight-talking, jargon-free education
- Community-driven — member wins become the proof
- Radically transparent about what works
- On the side of everyday working people
What we're not
- Regulated financial advisors (we always say so)
- A get-rich-quick scheme
- Elitist, preachy or condescending
- American-style hustle culture
What we stand for
No jargon, ever
If a guide needs a glossary, we've failed. We write the way people actually talk.
Community over personality
No cult of personality. The real proof is members sharing the money they've claimed.
Radical transparency
We show what works and what doesn't — and we cite the official source every time.
On your side
We answer to readers and members — not to the companies hoping you stay in the dark.
The scale of it
This is how much is sitting unclaimed across the regions we cover — money that belongs to ordinary people who simply weren't told.
How we stay honest
Every figure, grant amount and entitlement on this site is checked against the official source — Revenue.ie, Gov.ie, Citizens Information, the RTB, GOV.UK, HMRC, nidirect and the relevant councils. Rules change, so we date our content and update it weekly. We're an information service, not a regulated advisor, and we'll always tell you to confirm with the official body before you act.
We're proudly independent. We take no money from any supermarket, bank, advertiser or sponsor, run no adverts, and have no affiliate links anywhere on the site — everything here is free. If that ever changes, we'll tell you plainly. Here's exactly how we make money →
