Benefit Payment Dates (UK & Northern Ireland)

Your State Pension day is not random — it is decided by the last two digits of your National Insurance number. Put them in below and you will get your day, plus whether the next bank holiday clashes with it. Then check the bank holiday table, which includes the two Northern Ireland holidays most UK guides leave out.

Which day is your State Pension paid?

Runs entirely on your device — nothing is saved or sent.

State Pension payment day by National Insurance number

The State Pension is paid every four weeks in arrears, and the weekday depends only on your NI number:

Last two digitsPaid on
00 – 19Monday
20 – 39Tuesday
40 – 59Wednesday
60 – 79Thursday
80 – 99Friday

The bank holiday rule

If your payment is due on a bank holiday or a weekend, DWP and HMRC pay it on the last working day before. You are never paid late because of a bank holiday.

The trap. Being paid early is not extra money — it is the same payment arriving sooner, which means a longer gap before the next one. After the August 2026 bank holiday, payments due on 29, 30 or 31 August went out on Friday 28 August. Budget from your next payment date, not your last.

2026 bank holidays — Northern Ireland and England

Northern Ireland has ten bank holidays where England and Wales have eight. The two extra — St Patrick's Day and the Battle of the Boyne — move benefit payments in Northern Ireland and are missing from almost every UK payment-date guide.

2027 is not confirmed. The UK government does not usually publish a settled list much more than a year ahead, so we are not printing 2027 dates as fact. The 2026 dates above are confirmed. We will add 2027 when gov.uk does.

Common questions

What day is the State Pension paid in the UK?

Your payment day is set by the last two digits of your National Insurance number: 00 to 19 is Monday, 20 to 39 Tuesday, 40 to 59 Wednesday, 60 to 79 Thursday, and 80 to 99 Friday. It is paid every four weeks in arrears. If your day falls on a bank holiday you are paid the last working day before it.

Do I get paid early on a bank holiday?

Yes. If your payment is due on a bank holiday or a weekend, DWP and HMRC pay it on the last working day before instead. You are never paid late because of a bank holiday, and it is not extra money — it is your normal payment arriving sooner, so it has to last longer until the next one.

Are Northern Ireland benefit payment dates different?

The payments and rules are the same, but the bank holidays are not. Northern Ireland has ten bank holidays where England and Wales have eight — St Patrick's Day on 17 March and the Battle of the Boyne in July. Both can move your payment earlier, and most UK payment-date pages ignore them entirely.

When is Universal Credit paid?

Monthly, on the same date each month, set by the date your claim started rather than a national schedule. If that date lands on a weekend or bank holiday you are paid on the last working day before. For the August 2026 bank holiday, payments due on 29, 30 or 31 August were paid on Friday 28 August.

Why is my payment smaller after a bank holiday?

It should not be. What usually happens is the payment arrives early, so the gap to your next one is longer than usual and the money has to stretch further. Budget from the date of the next payment, not the last one.

Are the 2027 bank holiday dates confirmed?

Not fully. The UK government does not usually publish a confirmed list much more than a year or so ahead, so treat any 2027 date you see as provisional until it appears on gov.uk. The 2026 dates on this page are confirmed.
