Cut the cost of childcare

Childcare is one of the biggest bills a young family faces — and in both Ireland and the UK there's significant help that parents routinely underuse, because it's split across confusing schemes. Here's what's available on each side and how to actually get it.

Quick facts

Ireland
National Childcare Scheme subsidy + free preschool (ECCE)
UK
Tax-Free Childcare (a 20% top-up) + free childcare hours
UK top-up
Gov adds £2 for every £8 — up to £2,000/child/yr
Where
ncs.gov.ie (IE) · childcare-support.service.gov.uk (UK)

In Ireland

In the UK

Watch the overlap rules: you generally can't use Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as the Universal Credit childcare element — one is usually better than the other depending on your income. It's worth checking which leaves you better off.

How to claim — step by step

1

Use a registered provider

The subsidies only work with registered/approved childcare — check your provider is signed up.

2

Apply online

Ireland: the NCS at ncs.gov.ie (and register for ECCE through your provider). UK: set up Tax-Free Childcare and check free hours at Childcare Choices.

3

Check which scheme wins

UK: compare Tax-Free Childcare vs the UC childcare element. IE: combine NCS with free preschool where you can.

4

Reconfirm regularly

UK Tax-Free Childcare needs reconfirming every 3 months; subsidies can change with your income — keep them up to date.

Common questions

How much childcare help can I get?
It varies a lot. In the UK, Tax-Free Childcare adds up to £2,000 per child per year, plus free funded hours. In Ireland, the NCS subsidy plus two years of free preschool can cut your bill substantially. The exact amount depends on your income, hours and your child's age.
Can I use more than one scheme?
Sometimes. In Ireland you can combine NCS with the free preschool years. In the UK you generally can't mix Tax-Free Childcare with the Universal Credit childcare element at the same time — check which is better for you.
Who qualifies?
Working parents using registered childcare, broadly. UK free hours and Tax-Free Childcare have working-hours and income rules; Ireland's NCS has a universal element and a bigger income-assessed element. Check the current criteria for your situation.
Where do I apply?
Ireland: the National Childcare Scheme at ncs.gov.ie (and ECCE via your provider). UK: Tax-Free Childcare and free hours via the government's Childcare Choices service.
