Childcare is one of the biggest bills a young family faces — and in both Ireland and the UK there's significant help that parents routinely underuse, because it's split across confusing schemes. Here's what's available on each side and how to actually get it.
Quick facts
- Ireland
- National Childcare Scheme subsidy + free preschool (ECCE)
- UK
- Tax-Free Childcare (a 20% top-up) + free childcare hours
- UK top-up
- Gov adds £2 for every £8 — up to £2,000/child/yr
- Where
- ncs.gov.ie (IE) · childcare-support.service.gov.uk (UK)
In Ireland
- National Childcare Scheme (NCS) — a subsidy paid toward registered childcare. There's a universal subsidy (regardless of income, for younger children) and an income-assessed subsidy that's bigger for lower incomes. It can knock a serious chunk off your weekly bill.
- ECCE (free preschool) — children generally get two years of free preschool in the year(s) before primary school. Make sure you're signed up.
In the UK
- Tax-Free Childcare — for every £8 you pay into an online childcare account, the government adds £2, up to £2,000 per child per year (£4,000 if disabled). Works for nurseries, childminders and clubs.
- Free childcare hours — funded hours (commonly 15 or 30 a week, term-time) for eligible 3–4-year-olds, with the offer expanding to younger children. Check the current age rules.
- Universal Credit childcare element — if you're on UC, you can claim back a large share of childcare costs.
How to claim — step by step
Use a registered provider
The subsidies only work with registered/approved childcare — check your provider is signed up.
Apply online
Ireland: the NCS at ncs.gov.ie (and register for ECCE through your provider). UK: set up Tax-Free Childcare and check free hours at Childcare Choices.
Check which scheme wins
UK: compare Tax-Free Childcare vs the UC childcare element. IE: combine NCS with free preschool where you can.
Reconfirm regularly
UK Tax-Free Childcare needs reconfirming every 3 months; subsidies can change with your income — keep them up to date.
