The Additional Needs Payment is one of the most useful and least-known supports in Ireland: a one-off payment to help with an essential cost you can’t meet from your normal income. It’s flexible, it’s not a loan, and you can get it even if you’re working.
Quick facts
- What
- A one-off payment for an urgent or essential expense
- Who
- Anyone who can’t meet an essential cost — including people in work

What it can cover
It’s deliberately broad. Common examples include:
- A rent deposit or rent in advance

- Food and essential living costs in a crisis
- Funeral or burial costs
- Essential household items (cooker, fridge, bed, washing machine)
- Costs after an emergency such as a flood or fire
