Rural Social Scheme: a top-up for farmers and fishers, widened in 2026

The Rural Social Scheme gives supplementary income to low-income farmers and fishers who do work that benefits their own community. It widened twice in January 2026, and the two changes bring in people who were shut out before.

What it pays

The minimum weekly payment increased to €286.50 in January 2026. If the social welfare payment you were getting (including dependants) is €254 a week or less, you get that minimum — €254 plus €32.50. If your payment was €254.01 or more, you get the equivalent rate plus €32.50. If you were on an age-related reduced rate, your payment is increased to the minimum weekly rate of €286.50.

Who can qualify, including the 2026 changes

You must be getting a qualifying social welfare payment and be actively farming or fishing. From January 2026 the scheme is extended to people with a ‘defined connection’ to farming and fishing, and on a pilot basis to people aged 50 and over living in certain rural areas.

What the work is

Maintaining walking routes and bog roads, energy conservation work for older people and people at risk of poverty, village and countryside enhancement, social care and care of older people, community care for pre-school and after-school groups, and environmental maintenance.

How to apply

RSS is run locally by implementing bodies — local development companies, and Údarás na Gaeltachta in Gaeltacht areas — with the Department of Social Protection responsible overall. Contact the implementing body for your area.
