If you rent your home in Ireland, the Rent Tax Credit puts real money back in your pocket — up to €1,000 a year on your own, or €2,000 for a couple. Best of all, you can backdate it to 2022. This free tool estimates your total in seconds; nothing is saved.
How much Rent Tax Credit could you get?
If you rent your home in Ireland, you could be owed money back — for this year and up to four previous years.
Estimate only. The credit is 20% of rent paid, capped at €1,000 (single) / €2,000 (couple) for 2024–2026, and €500 / €1,000 for 2022–2023. It can't reduce your income tax below zero, so you need enough tax paid to use it fully.
How the credit works
The Rent Tax Credit is worth 20% of the rent you pay, up to a yearly cap. For 2024, 2025 and 2026 the cap is €1,000 for a single person and €2,000 for a jointly-assessed couple. For 2022 and 2023 it was half that — €500 and €1,000. So if your annual rent is €5,000 or more (single), you get the full €1,000.
Who can claim
- You pay rent for a home in Ireland that you live in (or, in some cases, a property your child uses to attend an approved course).
- The tenancy is a genuine one — it doesn't cover rent paid to a local authority, or "rent-a-room" arrangements with your own parent in some cases.
- You have enough income tax paid to use the credit — it can't reduce your tax below zero, and doesn't apply against USC or PRSI.
How to claim it back
You claim directly from Revenue through myAccount — for PAYE workers it's a short online form per year, and you can do the back years at the same time. It's completely free; you never need to pay anyone to claim it for you.
