Blue Badge: Who Qualifies & How to Apply

A Blue Badge lets you park closer to where you need to be — in disabled bays, and (with rules) on yellow lines and in some restricted areas. Many people qualify automatically through PIP or other benefits and don't realise it. Here's who's eligible and how to apply.

Do you automatically qualify?

You get a Blue Badge without further assessment if any of these apply:

• You score 8 points or more on the "moving around" activity of PIP, or you get the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component through any combination of descriptors.
• You scored exactly 10 points on descriptor E of "planning and following journeys" (because a journey would cause you overwhelming psychological distress).
• You're aged 3+ and get the higher rate mobility component of DLA.
• You're registered blind (severely sight impaired).
• You get a War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, or a lump-sum benefit within tariff levels 1–8 of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme with a permanent walking disability.

If you don't automatically qualify

You can still apply through a discretionary assessment if you have a permanent and substantial difficulty walking, a hidden disability that affects journeys, or you drive/are a passenger and struggle with mobility. Your local council decides, sometimes with a mobility assessment.

How to apply

Apply on GOV.UK (or your council's site in Scotland, Wales and NI). You'll usually need proof of identity and address, a recent photo, and proof of the qualifying benefit. The badge costs up to £10 in England, £20 in Scotland, and is free in Wales.
