The short answerIf you are a farmer aged 60 or over, this grant pays back half of what you spend on legal, accounting and advisory advice about handing on the farm. The most it pays is €1,500. You must farm at least 3 hectares and have farmed for at least 2 years. Apply by 30 November 2026.

You pay for the advice first, then claim half back. The grant is paid once a year, so 2026 claims are paid in early 2027.

Who can get it — the full rules

You may qualify if you are a farmer aged 60 or over and you are not already in a succession partnership.

You must also be farming at least 3 hectares when you apply, and have been farming for at least 2 years before you apply.

How much it pays

The grant pays 50% of your vouched costs for legal, accounting and advisory advice, not counting VAT. The most it pays is €1,500.

So you keep the receipts and invoices, and claim half back. In the last round, 201 grants were paid in the first quarter of 2026.

How to apply

1

Get your succession advice and pay for it

The grant covers vouched legal, accounting and advisory costs, so pay the bills and keep the proof.

2

Fill in the application form and checklist

Download both from the Department's Succession Planning Advice Grant page.

3

Attach proof of age, address and payment

Only fully completed applications with the listed documents are processed, including copies of every invoice and proof you paid it.

4

Send it before 30 November 2026

Applications are taken all year round, and this year's window closes on 30 November 2026.

5

Wait for payment early next year

Each year's claims are paid in Quarter 1 of the following year.

Things to watch

The grant pays you back for advice you have already paid for. It does not pay the adviser for you, and VAT is not covered.

The scheme runs until the end of the current CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027. For the tax reliefs on the transfer itself, see our farm succession guide.
