The short answerYou might be able to get help for energy-saving improvements to your home if you claim certain benefits and live in private housing, or live in social housing. It can pay for insulation and for replacing or repairing your boiler.

It is funded by the energy companies, not taxes. Ask your council whether it takes part, or contact a supplier on Ofgem's list.

If you get benefits and live in private housing

You might be eligible for help if you live in private housing and get one of the following benefits:

If you own your house, it must have an energy efficiency rating of D, E, F or G to be eligible.

If you rent from a private landlord, the house must have an energy efficiency rating of E, F or G to be eligible. You must have the owner’s permission to do the work.

Social housing

If you live in social housing that has an energy efficiency rating of E, F or G you might be eligible for help with insulation or installing a heating system for the first time.

How to apply

Contact your local council to find out if they’re taking part in the Energy Company Obligation scheme, or contact an energy supplier directly.

The Great British Insulation Scheme has ended

Installations must be complete by 31 March 2026, when the scheme ends. The service to check if you’re eligible for free or cheaper home insulation has closed. If you applied, contact the energy supplier you applied to.
