Family Fund: grants for families raising a disabled or seriously ill child

The short answerFamily Fund gives grants to families on a low income who are raising a disabled or seriously ill child. It looks at the support your child needs: they must need a high level of support in at least three of seven areas. You can apply whether you work or claim benefits.

Family Fund is a charity. In England, its Support for Families with Disabled Children programme is only open to first-time applicants from 24 September 2026 until the end of March 2027, because of very high demand.

Who can get it — the full rules

"Grants are available for families living on a low income, raising a disabled or seriously ill child or young person whose additional support needs meet our child and young persons eligibility criteria." "To be eligible, a child or young person must need a high level of support in at least three out of seven key areas we look at."

The seven areas are personal care, social activities, education, communication, supervision, medical or therapeutic treatment, and the physical environment. "Being in receipt of an award of Child Disability Payment (CDP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Adult Disability Payment (ADP) or Personal Independence payment (PIP) does not determine that your child or young person is eligible."

Household income

Families can be working or on a low-income benefit such as Universal Credit, Child or Working Tax Credit, Housing Benefit or Pension Credit. "You can still apply if you don’t receive any benefits." "Unfortunately, we are not usually able to award a grant if you have a significant level of household income, savings or capital."

Change until March 2027 (England)

Because of very high demand, "from 24 September 2026 until the end of March 2027, the programme will now only be open to families applying for the first time."
