Your rights once you're granted international protection

The short answerOnce you're declared a refugee or given subsidiary protection, you can work without any permit, and apply for social welfare, social housing, HAP and medical care exactly as an Irish citizen can. Refugees can apply for Irish citizenship after 5 years of reckonable residence.

The first job is registering for an Irish Residence Permit. Then apply for the payments you need: Jobseeker's Allowance, Child Benefit, and One-Parent Family Payment are all open to you now.

Your rights

"Refugees can apply for Irish citizenship after 5 years of reckonable residence."

How long your status lasts

"Refugee status is granted for a least 3 years and then reviewed." "Subsidiary protection is granted for at least one year and reviewed after 2 years." "You must register and get an Irish Residence Permit ."

Permission to remain, for people who applied before 12 June 2026 and weren't granted protection, gives most of these rights. "You do not have the same right to family reunification as a person with a refugee or subsidiary protection declaration."

Leaving direct provision

"Your direct provision normally ends when you get your declaration, but sometimes you can stay in direct provision while you are looking for your own place to live." Register for social housing with your council, and use HAP to rent privately.

If you are about to be homeless, contact your local authority. Your local Citizens Information Centre and MABS can help you plan the move.
