Jobseeker's Allowance is not only for people with no work at all. If you are down to 3 days a week or less, you may get it for the days you do not work. That is easy to miss.

Who can get Jobseeker's Allowance
"To get JA, you must be aged 18 or over and under 66." You must also:
- Be fully unemployed, or work 3 days a week or less
- Be available for full-time work and genuinely seeking it
- Be capable of work
- Pass a means test
- Meet the habitual residence condition
School leavers wait. "To get Jobseeker's Allowance you must be at least 18 and be out of school for 3 months." Full-time third-level students cannot claim it, even in the summer, unless they are mature students.
Coming off Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Pay-Related Benefit? You can move to JA when that ends. You can also switch early if the reduced rate you are on is lower than JA would be. That is called Optional JA.
Working part-time and claiming
"If you are working 3 days a week or less, you may get JA for the days when you do not work." You still have to show you are looking for full-time work.
The same applies if your employer cuts you to 3 days or fewer. Your earnings are counted in the means test, so the more you earn, the less JA you get.
If you have children and stop claiming JA when you start work, you can apply for the Back to Work Family Dividend.
The means test
"The means test looks at your income, savings, investments and property, but not your own home." It includes your spouse's, civil partner's or cohabitant's income.
"To find your rate of Jobseeker’s Allowance, the DSP deducts your total means from the maximum payment for your household."
Under 25 and living at home? "If you are 24 or under and living with a parent (or a step-parent) in the family home, the JA means test assesses some of your parents’ income."
Rates for 2026
- Aged 25 and over: up to €254 a week, plus €168.60 for a qualified adult
- Aged 18 to 24 and living independently with a state housing support such as HAP or Rent Supplement: €254
- Aged 18 to 24 and not living independently: €163.70
- Each child under 12: €58 (full rate) or €29 (half rate)
- Each child 12 or over: €78 (full rate) or €39 (half rate)

You may also get Fuel Allowance once you have been on JA for 312 days. "You do not qualify for the Household Benefits Package or Free Travel with JA."
What can stop or cut the payment
"You could be disqualified from getting JA for up to 9 weeks if you:"
- Left work voluntarily and without just cause
- Lost your job through misconduct
- Refused an offer of suitable work or training, after at least 21 days on a penalty rate
Your payment can also be cut if you miss meetings the Department asks you to attend, or do not take part in a suitable scheme or training.
How to apply
"It is important to apply on the first day you become unemployed because you do not get paid for the first 3 days of your claim."
Apply online at MyWelfare.ie with a verified MyGovID, or at your Intreo Centre. A late claim can be backdated if you have good evidence for the delay.
If you are refused, you can appeal to the Social Welfare Appeals Office.
