Home / Guides / Lead pipe grant

The lead pipe grant: 100% of the cost, up to €5,000

The short answerIf your home has lead pipes, the Domestic Lead Remediation Grant pays 100% of replacing them, up to €5,000, plus up to €200 for a lead test. The job must cost at least €750. Uisce Éireann will replace the lead on the public side of your boundary if you do your side.

Homes built before the 1980s are the ones most likely to have lead. The HSE says no level of lead in drinking water is safe, especially for babies, children and pregnant women.

Why it matters

"The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Health Service Executive (HSE) advise that there is no safe level of lead in drinking water." Lead was used in Irish plumbing until the 1980s.

What the grant pays

"The Domestic Lead Remediation Grant covers 100% of the qualifying work up to €5,000. If it costs less than €750 to replace the pipes, you will not qualify for the grant." For proving you have lead, "The grant covers the cost for this up to a maximum of €200."

"You must live in the property as your normal place of residence. If you rent the property, you must have the owner's permission to get the work done." Holiday homes and council-owned homes don't qualify.

How to apply

You need evidence, such as a notice from Uisce Éireann or a group water scheme, or "A laboratory certificate issued within the previous 6 months , showing that the level of lead in your water supply is over the legal limit."

"You must get the work done before applying for the grant." Use a tax-compliant contractor and keep itemised receipts. "You must make the appeal to your local authority in writing within 3 weeks of the decision."

"Uisce Éireann will replace any lead pipes on the public side of your property's boundary if you: Are a customer of Uisce Éireann Plan to replace the lead pipes inside your property's boundary".
