Going to college as a mature student: the money you can get

The short answerIf you're over 23 and going to college, you're a mature student. Colleges hold places for you, free fees and SUSI grants apply if it's your first undergraduate degree, and if you're on a jobseeker's, one-parent or disability payment, the Back to Education Allowance lets you keep an income while you study.

Do both: apply to SUSI even if you're getting Back to Education Allowance. You won't get SUSI maintenance too, but SUSI can still cover the student contribution.

Who counts as mature

"If you want to enter or return to third-level education and you are over 23 years of age, you are considered a mature student." "Irish third-level colleges set aside a number of places for mature students ."

Fees and grants

Free fees and a SUSI grant work the same way for mature students. SUSI also funds part-time courses, PLCs and postgraduate study.

"If you're applying for an undergraduate course and you have already completed an undergraduate course, you are not eligible for either a student grant or free fees." There are exceptions if you left a course unfinished.

If you're on a welfare payment

Back to Education Allowance pays you to study full-time, up to Level 8, if you've been on an unemployment, one-parent or disability payment. "You cannot get the maintenance part of the student grant if you get the Back to Education Allowance."

"However, you may get an exemption from college fees or the student contribution, so you should complete a student grant application."

Who to talk to

"Most colleges have a mature students' officer who can give information about the financial supports available." The Student Assistance Fund helps with hardship once you're in college, and you can claim tax relief on fees you pay.
