Newborn Baby Grant: €280 with your first Child Benefit

Amount

€280 per child, once

Twins€560
The short answerA one-off €280 for each baby born or adopted on or after 1 December 2024, paid with the first month of Child Benefit. Twins get €560. You do not apply for it separately: claim Child Benefit and it comes with the first payment.

Citizens Information calls it the New Baby Grant; the Department calls it the Newborn Baby Grant. It is the same €280, and it was introduced in Budget 2025.

What it is

"A New Baby Grant of €280 is paid in addition to the first month of Child Benefit for children born or adopted on or after 1 December 2024." "The New Baby Grant is €280 per child, so if you have twins, the grant is €560."

How you get it

There is no separate application. Claim Child Benefit for the baby in the usual way (the Department writes to most parents after the birth is registered) and the grant arrives with the first monthly payment. If the baby was born before 1 December 2024, the grant does not apply.

What else to claim at the same time

Maternity Benefit, Paternity Benefit and Parent's Benefit are separate claims with their own time limits, and the Working Family Payment or Child Benefit for an older child may change now there is another child in the house. The new baby money guide lists them all in order.
