Own-brand vs branded: the swaps that actually save

Swapping branded groceries for own-brand is the quietest big saving in the shop: own-brand is frequently 30–50% cheaper for the same product — sometimes literally made in the same factory. But not every swap is worth it. Here’s where own-brand wins outright, where to spend the extra, and how to test it without risking a whole shop.

Is own-brand really the same as branded?

Often, yes — many own-brand products are made by the same manufacturers as the big brands, on the same lines, just in different packaging.

Not always identical, but far more often than people assume. The brand premium pays for marketing, not necessarily a better product. Independent taste tests repeatedly rate supermarket own-brand as good as — sometimes better than — the branded version, especially for store-cupboard staples, tinned goods, frozen veg, cleaning products and over-the-counter medicines (where the active ingredient is legally identical).

Which swaps are the easy wins?

Anything where you can’t taste the brand: painkillers, cleaning products, tinned tomatoes, pasta, rice, flour, sugar, frozen veg, tin foil, bin bags.

Start with medicines — own-brand paracetamol or ibuprofen has the exact same active ingredient as the branded box at a fraction of the price, by law. Then the invisible staples: cleaning sprays, kitchen roll, tinned and dried goods, frozen veg. Nobody can taste the brand of your bleach or your tin of tomatoes, and these are where 30–50% comes off with zero downside.

Is anything worth keeping branded?

A handful of things where you genuinely notice a difference — often a favourite tea, coffee, or a specific treat. Taste-test before you decide.

Be honest, not loyal. Run a blind test: buy the own-brand once, compare it to the brand, and keep the brand only where you can actually tell and it matters to you. Most people find that’s two or three items, not twenty. Everything else can swap. The goal isn’t to eat worse — it’s to stop paying a brand tax on things you can’t distinguish.

How much does this actually save?

Ten well-chosen swaps typically save €10–€20+ a week — that’s €500–€1,000+ a year for changes you’ll stop noticing within a fortnight.

It compounds because it’s every shop, forever. Unlike a one-off deal, a swap you make once keeps saving every week. Combine it with shopping at a discounter (whose ranges are mostly own-brand anyway) and you’re stacking the two biggest grocery levers. Check where you stand with our grocery calculator.
