Most people on Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension believe that taking a job ends the payment. Partial Capacity Benefit is the scheme that says otherwise — you keep a percentage of your payment based on how much your condition restricts you, and then, in Citizens Information's own words, “You can work as many hours as you wish, as there is no restriction on earnings.”
That sentence is the whole point of this page. Nearly every other payment in the Irish system tapers away as you earn. This one does not. Yet it is barely known, because nobody is told about it at the moment they most need to hear it — the moment they think about going back to work and assume it is not allowed.

What Partial Capacity Benefit actually is
It is, in the Department's description, “a social welfare scheme which allows you to return to work or self-employment (if you have reduced capacity to work) and continue to get a payment from the Department of Social Protection”.
You do not have to justify the job. Citizens Information is explicit that “The work you do while on Partial Capacity Benefit does not have to be for rehabilitative or therapeutic purposes.” It can simply be a job you want.
Who qualifies
Two conditions, and then a medical assessment.
- You are getting Illness Benefit for at least 6 months, or Invalidity Pension.
- Your restriction on capacity for work is assessed as moderate, severe or profound. “You will not qualify if it is assessed as mild.”
The assessment is not about your diagnosis. It is about how much your condition restricts your capacity for work, and it is what sets your rate.
What you get — 50%, 75% or 100%
Your personal rate is a percentage of the Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension you were already on:
- Moderate — 50%
- Severe — 75%
- Profound — 100%
At the maximum personal rate, those are the 2026 figures below. The first column is for someone coming from Illness Benefit, the second for someone under 66 coming from Invalidity Pension.
- Moderate — €127 (Illness Benefit) · €129.75 (Invalidity Pension)
- Severe — €190.50 · €194.65
- Profound — €254 · €259.50
Increases for a qualified adult and for children continue to be paid at the same rate — they are not cut by the percentage. So a profound assessment with a partner and two children is the full household payment, plus a wage, with no limit on the wage.
What it can and cannot sit beside
This is where people lose money by guessing.
- You cannot get Partial Capacity Benefit and the Working Family Payment together.
- You can get Partial Capacity Benefit and a half-rate Carer's Allowance together.
- You cannot get it and take part in a Community Employment scheme.
- Going on a FET training course is a different route — you stay on Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension and apply to that section instead.
- Volunteering also needs separate permission, from the Partial Capacity Benefit section or the Invalidity Pension section.
How long it runs
- From Invalidity Pension: up to 3 years (156 weeks), or until you turn 66. You can apply again at the end of the three years and be reassessed.
- From Illness Benefit: to the end of your entitlement to Illness Benefit.
If you get ill again, short breaks are protected. For periods up to 8 weeks you stay on Partial Capacity Benefit and your weekly rate can be increased to the full Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension personal rate. Longer than 8 weeks and the claim is reassessed, and you may go back to your original payment — and back onto Partial Capacity Benefit later if you are able for work again.
Turning 66
Coming from Invalidity Pension, the payment stops at 66 and you transfer to the State Pension (Contributory). Coming from Illness Benefit, you can keep working and keep Partial Capacity Benefit until your claim is due to end — but only if you act on the letter. The section writes to you 13 weeks before your 66th birthday, and if you do not sign and return the declaration, the Department closes the claim at 66.
