Postgraduate Tuition Fee Loan

The Postgraduate Tuition Fee Loan helps with course fees. It will increase to £10,000 in academic year 2026-27, for courses you start that year. Apply through Student Finance NI.

Department for the Economy studentships

The PGR scheme pays approved fees and maintenance for PhD research, MRes courses, and CAST studentships run with an industry partner. In academic year 2026 to 2027 the basic rates of maintenance support are £21,805 for a research studentship and £10,903 for a taught (MRes) studentship.

These awards are not affected by your parent’s income or your income, but if you are receiving similar support from industry or a university, you are not eligible for a studentship. Check with QUB or Ulster University whether your course is eligible, and apply directly to that university.

DAERA studentships

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs funds research studentships in its research areas. In academic year 2026/ 27 the anticipated maintenance allowance for a research studentship is £21,383, and DAERA pays fees directly to your university. Your research proposal must address one of DAERA's research needs. Applications for 2026 closed on 19 February 2026.

Other help

If you have a disability, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty you may be able to apply for Disabled Students' Allowance. Eligible students undertaking certain courses of Initial Teacher Training such as Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) may be eligible to apply for the undergraduate package of student financial support. Universities, Research Councils (UKRI) and charities also fund places.
