The distance rule
The qualifying distance is two miles for primary pupils and three miles for post-primary pupils, measured by the shortest route a child, accompanied as needed, can walk with reasonable safety.
A suitable school means one in a recognised category, such as controlled, maintained, integrated, Irish-medium or grammar. If your child qualifies, the EA decides what kind of transport or support to give.
Children with special needs or a disability
The EA should take disability or special educational needs into account. If your child's statement of special educational needs includes transport, the EA must provide it. Pupils within the distance can sometimes get help in exceptional circumstances.
