The State Pension (Contributory): how the 2025 rules work out your rate

The short answerThe State Pension (Contributory) is €299.30 a week at 66 in 2026, and it's not means-tested, so you can keep working or have another pension. You need 520 paid contributions to qualify. For the full rate, the new Total Contributions Approach needs 2,080, roughly 40 years, including up to 20 years for caring.

If you've ever paid PRSI in Ireland, even years ago, apply: you may get a part pension. Request your contribution statement on MyWelfare.ie first so you know where you stand.

The basics

"Age 66 at SPC draw down €299.30 €199.40 €268.40": the full rate, and the increases for a qualified adult under and over 66. "The State Pension (Contributory) is not means-tested."

"You should apply for the State Pension (Contributory) if you have ever worked in Ireland and have paid PRSI contributions (stamps) at any time."

Qualifying

"If you reach pension age on or after 6 April 2012, you need to have 520 full-rate PRSI contributions (10 years' contributions)." "To get a State Pension (Contributory) at 66, you must have started paying PRSI before the age of 56." Deferring to 70 gives you more time.

How your rate is worked out

"Using the TCA method, you will qualify for the maximum personal rate of State Pension (Contributory), if you have 2,080 or more PRSI contributions (for example, 40 years of employment)." Fewer, and you get a share: "Or, if you have a combined total of 1469 contributions, this will entitle you to 70.62% of the maximum pension (1469 / 2080 x 100 = 70.62%)".

The old Yearly Average is being phased out. "If you start your SPC in 2026, your SPC rate can be a combined rate using: 80% of the rate calculated using the YA method and 20% of the rate calculated using the TCA method (see above)". You get whichever method pays more. "By 2034, the rate of payment will be calculated using only the Total Contribution Approach method."

Carers and homemakers

HomeCaring Periods, Long-Term Carers Contributions and the Homemaker's Scheme can fill gaps. "You can use Long-Term Carers Contributions and HomeCaring Periods Scheme together, as long as the periods of care don't overlap." One form, the PCS1, covers all three. Already on a pension? Ask for a review.

Applying

Apply on MyWelfare.ie or on form SPC1, choosing any start date between 66 and 70. The Department is on 0818 200 400. If your rate is low, compare it with the non-contributory pension.
