Who can work
You can work if you applied for protection here and "Have been waiting 6 months for the first decision on your application for asylum". "If you get a first instance decision on your application for asylum within 6 months, then you are not allowed to apply for Labour Market Access (LMA)."

Apply early
"It is free to apply." You can apply online if you are co-operating with the process and "Have been waiting at least 5 months for a decision on your asylum application." Count from the date on your Temporary Residence Card or IPA certificate.
"After you apply, it can take up to 4 months to get your permission to work." You need a copy of your in-date TRC or IPA certificate, your identity documents (or why you couldn't get them) and an email address.
Renewing
"Your permission to work is for one year." "You should renew your Labour Market Access permission online one month before it expires." "You can continue to work for 4 weeks after your permission has expired."
