The basic bank account: free banking if you don't have an account

The short answerIf you don't already have a current account in Ireland, you can open a basic bank account: free everyday banking for the first year, and for up to 5 years if less than the minimum wage goes into it each year. You get a debit card, transfers, direct debits and online banking, but no overdraft.

It suits anyone who's been refused an account, new arrivals, or people who just need somewhere for wages or social welfare to go.

What you get

"A basic bank account is a current account that is free of charge for everyday banking for at least the first year." Free services include "Taking money out at an ATM (cash machine) Using a debit card in a shop Using a debit card to pay for something online", plus transfers, standing orders, direct debits and online banking.

"You can continue to get free banking for up to 5 years in total if the amount paid into your account each year is less than the minimum wage."

Who can open one

"You can open a basic bank account with a bank in Ireland if you are resident in the European Union (EU) and you do not already have another payment or current account in Ireland." Ask the bank of your choice.

"You cannot get an overdraft or cheque book. Your debit card may not come with the contactless payment feature. You can only hold one account." MABS on 0818 07 2000 can help if a bank is difficult.
