The It Makes Sense loan: an alternative to moneylenders

The short answerIf you get a social welfare payment, you can borrow a small amount from a participating credit union at a low interest rate through the It Makes Sense loan, instead of going to a moneylender. You can use it for anything, including clearing another debt. Repayments come out of your payment each week.

Licensed moneylenders in Ireland can charge very high rates. This scheme exists to give people on welfare a cheaper option.
