Paying less for buses and trains: the fares that save most

The short answerIn Dublin, the TFI-90 fare is €2 for up to 90 minutes on Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and Go-Ahead, and just €1 for young adults aged 19 to 25 and students, or 65c for children with a Leap Card. A Leap Card saves up to 30% on cash fares everywhere it's accepted.

Get a Young Adult or Student Leap Card if you're 19 to 25: it halves most fares. Cash buses need exact coins; no change is given.

Dublin: the 90-minute fare

"The TFI-90 fare allows free transfers between Dublin Bus ( except Express and Nitelink services), Luas, DART and commuter rail zone 1 , and Go-Ahead Ireland services (Dublin City Bus network)." It costs "€2 for an Adult €1 for a Young Adult (19-25) or Student €0.65 cents for Child Leap Card holders (5-18)".

Cork and other cities

Since 20 July 2026, Cork city Leap fares are "€1.70 for adults €0.85 for Young Adults (19-25) and students €0.55 for children", with 90 minutes of transfers. Leap fares also run in Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Sligo, Kilkenny and other towns.

Leap Cards

"You can save up to 30% by using a Leap Card compared to paying with cash." There are Leap Cards for children 5 to 8, 5 to 15, 16 to 18, young adults 19 to 25 and students. Paying cash? "You must have the exact fare and only coins (not notes) are accepted. No change is given."

In rural areas, "Cash and the Free Travel Pass are accepted on all Local Link services and children under 5 can travel for free." "The NTA have announced changes to fare amounts from January 2027 ."
