TaxSaver tickets: your commute paid from pay before tax

The short answerWith a TaxSaver ticket, your employer buys your bus, rail or Luas ticket and takes the cost from your gross pay, so you pay no tax, PRSI or USC on it. That saves between 27.2% and 52.2% of the ticket price. You can't apply yourself: your employer has to register.

The ticket also works evenings and weekends. Ask HR: your employer saves on PRSI too.

How it saves you money

"Taxsaver tickets are not subject to tax, PRSI or USC." "Employees can save between 27.2% and 52.2% of travel costs due to income tax, PRSI and USC savings."

Citizens Information's example: "If the annual cost of a bus and rail ticket is €1,800 and an employee earns €30,000 per year:" "So, their salary is reduced by €1,800 a year, or €34.62 per week, to cover the cost of the annual ticket (€1,800 divided by 52 weeks)." Tax is then charged on €28,200.

The rules

"Employees cannot apply for the scheme or buy the ticket themselves." "A signed Taxsaver contract usually lasts for 12 months." "Tickets are strictly non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash benefits."

"Tickets can also be used for personal travel outside of office hours." Monthly tickets can be bought up to 2 weeks ahead; annual tickets start on the first of any month.

For employers

"Employers can avail of tax relief in the form of PRSI savings of up to 11.25%." Register with the transport provider, sign contracts with staff, and order through your company administrator. It can replace a cash bonus or be a benefit-in-kind.
