Adaptations that count
- A room, other than a kitchen, bathroom or toilet, used wholly by the disabled person for treatment or therapy
- An extra kitchen for the disabled person
- An extra toilet or bathroom for the disabled person, including an ensuite
- Enough floor space to use a wheelchair easily inside (outdoor-only wheelchairs are excluded)
"There must be a clear link between how the property has been adapted and the person's disability."
One thing that probably will not count: "Rearranging rooms to meet the needs of the disabled person, for example, having a bedroom on the ground floor rather than the first floor, would likely not qualify for DPA."
How to apply
"To apply for Disabled Persons Allowance (DPA), the person who pays rates on the property must send an application form." Email it to Land & Property Services or post it.
Include the disabled person's National Insurance number, information about their disability with any medical evidence, and details of the adaptations. LPS may visit to see them.
Keep paying your rates while you wait, including while you wait for a visit. If approved, LPS refunds or credits the difference.
