What mediation does
A trained mediator helps you both reach your own agreement on parenting, schooling, holidays, financial support, the family home and dividing assets. It is not counselling and not legal advice, and the mediator doesn't take sides.
"Mediation can be an effective, cheaper and quicker alternative to court."
How to use it
"For an appointment, both parties must contact the service separately to make an appointment." "There can be waiting lists to access this service."
Private mediators are also available through the Mediators' Institute of Ireland, and charge in different ways.
What you end up with
Most mediations end with a written Note of Mediated Agreement. "The mediated agreement is not a legal agreement, however, you can bring this document to a solicitor to be drawn into a legal contract or deed of separation ." It can also be the basis for a divorce.
