Jobseeker's Allowance for artists: a year to focus on your work

The short answerIf you're a professional artist on Jobseeker's Allowance, this scheme exempts you from job-search activation for your first year out of work, so you can build your portfolio. You need to be registered self-employed, certified by a professional body, and have earned at least half your income from art last year.

You still have to qualify for Jobseeker's Allowance itself, including the means test, but you're assessed as self-employed, so professional expenses count.
