Learning and courses in Northern Ireland

Free courses

Many courses in literacy and numeracy are free, and you may not have to pay for tuition if you’re going for your first qualification equal to GCSEs or A levels. If you want to gain new skills relevant to your job, your employer is a good first point of call.

Free careers advice

The Careers Service offers free and impartial advice by phone, webchat, in person or by email. A careers adviser can help with your goals, CVs, interviews and any financial help available.

University bursaries

Universities and colleges based in Northern Ireland have to offer a minimum payment to students on the full Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant who pay maximum tuition fees. In 2026 - 2027 the minimum bursary for a student receiving the full Maintenance Grant on a course charging the full £4,985 tuition fees is £498, but some universities may offer more.

Where to study

Northern Ireland has three universities, two university colleges, six further education colleges and an agri-food and land based college. Higher education can also be studied part-time or by distance learning, including through the Open University.

Higher education qualifications mainly relate to levels 4 - 8, from Higher National Certificates up to doctorates.

Studying abroad

The Study USA programme provides students attending a college or university in Northern Ireland, with the opportunity to study for one full academic year in the USA. Students must be enrolled in full-time education college or university in Northern Ireland. If you plan to study a whole degree overseas, start planning 12 to 18 months ahead.
