What a public hospital costs now: A&E €100, a stay nothing

The short answerAs a public patient, a stay in a public hospital is free: in-patient charges were abolished on 17 April 2023. Going to A&E without a GP letter costs €100, and an injury unit €75. Both are free with a medical card or a GP referral.

Bring your GP's letter to A&E: it saves you €100. The €100 covers the first visit for an illness or injury; follow-up clinic visits for the same problem are free.
