SURE: turn the tax you've already paid into start-up money

The short answerIf you leave a job, or have been made redundant, to start your own company, SURE can refund income tax you paid as an employee: up to 41% of the money you invest in the company's shares, from the year you invest and the 6 years before. You must work in the company full-time and keep the shares for 4 years.

For someone with years of PAYE behind them, it can turn a redundancy lump sum into a much bigger start-up stake. Get an accountant to check the trade qualifies before you invest.
