DLA for adults and Severe Disablement Allowance in NI

The short answerBoth are closed to new adult claims. If you already get Disability Living Allowance and are 16 to State Pension age, it continues until the Department for Communities invites you to claim PIP. Over State Pension age with a lifetime award, it continues and you will not be moved to PIP. Severe Disablement Allowance continues while you meet its conditions.

Many people still get these older benefits. Here are the current rates and what to expect.

Disability Living Allowance for adults

DLA is tax-free and has two parts, care and mobility. The care part is £30.30, £76.70 or £114.60 a week, and the mobility part is £30.30 or £80.00 a week. It is usually paid every four weeks.

Aged 16 to State Pension age, you keep DLA until the Department for Communities writes to tell you when it ends and invites you to claim PIP. Over State Pension age with a lifetime award, DLA continues while you meet the conditions. New claims are only possible for children under 16.

DLA can increase other benefits, such as Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit and Pension Credit.

Severe Disablement Allowance

No new claims have been allowed since 6 April 2001, and Employment and Support Allowance replaced it. If you already get it, it continues while you meet the conditions.

It is not usually affected by volunteering, or by working under 16 hours a week and earning up to £203.50 a week. Tell the Department for Communities about any change in your circumstances.

Common questions

Can I still claim DLA as an adult in Northern Ireland?

Will I be moved from DLA to PIP?
