Who qualifies
At primary level, your child must "Be enrolled in their nearest primary school Live 3.2km or more from their nearest suitable national school". At post-primary, it's 4.8km from the nearest suitable school. "Suitable" takes account of ethos and language.
The nearest-school rule has exceptions: the nearest all-Irish, all-English or minority-faith school still qualifies. "Children with special educational needs are also eligible for free transport to and from special schools and to special classes ."
What it costs
"€100 for a primary school child or concessionary child €100 for a post-primary school child or concessionary child". There's a lower maximum fee per family: check the figure on Bus Éireann's portal when you pay.
With a medical card, "Your child can get free school transport to their nearest school if they:" are eligible and have a valid card. "If your child has a medical card but does not attend their nearest school, they cannot get free transport to that school." "The medical card waiver does not apply for concessionary seats."
Concessionary seats
If your child isn't eligible, they may still get a spare seat once eligible children are seated. You have to apply and pay on time to be considered. Late applications are only ever considered for concessionary seats, if any are left.
No bus? The Remote Area Grant
If your child is eligible, you applied on time and there's no service, or the pick-up point is 3.2km or more away, you may get a Remote Area Grant. "The maximum daily allowance is €5.10 per day." You don't apply: the Department contacts you, and it's paid at the end of the school year.
"Late applications are not eligible for the Remote Area Grant." A Special Transport Grant can help if illness or disability means your child can't get to school without transport.
